Careers News Term 2 Week 10 /?p=31018 Thu, 02 Jul 2020 05:07:47 +0000 http://www.wssc.vic.edu.au/?p=31018 Changes to the cost of university courses in 2021

From 2021, the cost of some university courses will change. Currently, the Government provides funding to universities for courses at different levels according to the study areas. Essentially, the Government funds part of your degree, and you pay the rest – this is called the ‘student contribution amount’. There are currently 3 levels of student contribution bands. You can see these at

From 2021, student contribution bands for certain study areas will either increase, decrease or stay the same.

What does this mean for me?

How this will impact you will depend on what you study in 2021. For example:
Courses in nursing, teaching, languages, agriculture and maths will significantly decrease. Courses in science, health, architecture, environmental science, IT and engineering etc., will decrease.

Courses in medicine, dental and veterinary science etc., won’t change.
Courses in law and commerce will increase. Courses in humanities and social sciences will significantly increase by around 113%. Bookmark the Study Assist website and check regularly for updates to university fees and HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP information: www.studyassist.gov.au/

Careers News Term 3 Week 3 /?p=29578 Fri, 02 Aug 2019 04:08:41 +0000 http://www.wssc.vic.edu.au/?p=29578 Quote of the week:
“If you do a little bit of something every day then you are going to reach that place eventually” – Joseph Ruzer

Hello from the Careers@WSSC Team!

This weeks quote is an important one. Take the time to read it again.
Coming into Term 3 you may be feeling a little overwhelmed. If you keep moving forward every day you will eventually get to that place you want to be.
Where is that place for you? Is it an apprenticeship? TAFE or University? Employment? Overseas travel?
Some days we take giant leaps toward our goals, and some days we crawl slowly but each day you move you’re getting closer to that goal. Take some time to reflect on your progress and revisit your goals.

IT’S TAX TIME!

We have had a lot of students in the Careers@WSSC Headquarters enquiring about tax file numbers, tax returns and superannuation lately. But what exactly is all this?
Tax File Numbers (TFN) – Everyone has a unique TFN. Your TFN is yours for life, even if you change jobs, move interstate or change your name. If you leave the country and later come back to Australia, you still use the same TFN.

When you make enquiries about your tax records, the Australian Taxation Office will ask you for your TFN. TFN is valuable. Do not share it with friends and do not provide it over the internet when applying for jobs. For more information about applying for a Tax File Number visit:

Tax Returns – At the end of the financial year (June 30) you’re expected to fill in a tax return to work out how much tax you should have paid that year. If it turns out you’ve paid more tax than you needed to, you could be entitled to a refund or you haven’t paid enough Tax you may have to pay a Tax bill. You can find more information here:
Superannuation – Super is money that is paid by your employer into a super account of your choice.
Depending on your superannuation fund conditions you can access your superannuation when you retire. Super is paid in addition to your salary. You can also add to your super from your own money!

Super is paid whether you are full-time, part-time or casual. You should be paid super if you are:
• aged 18 or over and earn at least $450 a month (before tax), or
• aged under 18, work at least 30 hours a week and earn at least $450 a month (before tax).
Use the Super Calculator to find out how much you should be paid:

GET EXCITED, GET INVOLVED, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, GET INFORMED!
Drop into the Careers Office (C17) to make an appointment or email us careers@www.wssc.vic.edu.au
